Soap or Lotion Dispenser

This is such a fun, beautiful, and useful gift, particularly as a housewarming present. Mercury glass is making a comeback from its old-fashioned roots and shines beautifully. Spray paint and household vinegar make the job of transforming a plain jar into gorgeous mercury glass easy. Of course, smooth-sided jars work best for this technique. Reuse pretty soap dispenser tops, or you can purchase one at your local craft or home goods store. Fill it with a luxuriously scented hand soap or lotion.

Supplies

1 smooth-sided pint jar

1 2-piece jar lid

Awl or other sharp instrument to make hole in lid

Hammer

Pliers

E600 glue

Mirror-effect spray paint (such as Krylon’s “Looking Glass”)

White vinegar

Water

Fill a spray bottle with ¼ cup vinegar and ¼ cup water and shake to combine. Spray the jar with the mixture, then immediately spray with the mirror-effect spray paint. Continue this technique until the jar is covered and dry. Repeat with a second coat if you like a deeper color. While that dries, prepare the lid. Use an awl and a hammer to pierce a hole in the center of the flat part of the lid. Use the plier to open the hole wide enough for the soap dispenser bottom to fit through. Put a thin ring of E600 glue around the edge of the soap dispenser bottom where it will be flush against the lid, and thread it through the hole, pressing into place until dry. Then, simply fill the jar with soap, add the lid, spin the ring into place, and voila!
